For novel oncology therapies.
Bone marrow
and bone stem cell transplant therapies provide clinicians
with alternatives for mitigating various types of leukemia
and blood cancers. Our therapeutic antibody technology has
been applied in two unique life-saving bone marrow / bone
stem cell applications, which the company plans to pursue
for possible commercialization.
- Pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Philadelphia +
ALL): For children with ALL, bone marrow transplants using
matched sibling donors has been associated with better long-term
survival. Without a matched sibling donor, however, many
young patients are precluded from this promising therapy.
In an experimental trial, our therapeutic antibody was used
as part of a protocol using unrelated and/or partially mismatched
related donors. The study concluded that the protocol using
our antibody was a reasonable and recommended course of
treatment for patients without matched siblings, thus opening
up a new treatment alternative for these young patients.
- Hematologic malignancy high risk patients: In a study
of adults with high-risk hematologic malignancy, our therapeutic
antibody was applied in a unique bone stem cell treatment
targeted at patients who would otherwise be ineligible for
such a transplant due to the toxic pre-conditioning required
(chemotherapy and/or irradiation). The study concluded that
the use of our therapeutic in a conditioning regimen with
a single agent chemotherapy was able to achieve durable
bone stem cell engraftment, and long-term survival in high
risk patients who would not have qualified for conventional
pre-conditioned bone stem cell therapy.
