John S. Thompson, MD
Professor of Medicine
University of Kentucky Medical Center
John Thompson, co-developer of the TOL-101 monoclonal antibody,
received his medical degree from the University of Chicago,
Pritzker School of Medicine. He has been Chief of General
Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago and from 1970-1980,
was the Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Director
of the Histocompatibility Laboratories at the University of
Iowa. Most recently, at the University of Kentucky, he has
served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine,
and currently, as the Lexington VAMC Associate Chief of Staff
for Research and Development.
Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Internal
Medicine. He has served as President of several organizations
including the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics,
the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics,
and the South Eastern Procurement Foundation, as well as Chair
of the UNOS Histocompatibility Committee, Treasurer of the
Executive Committee of the National Marrow Donor Foundation,
ACGME Residency Review Committee, and has served on numerous
committees of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Throughout his career Dr. Thompson has engaged in research
centered on the immunology of solid organ and bone marrow
transplantation. He developed the University of Kentucky Clinical
Research Organization, as Assistant Vice President for Clinical
Research and has authored of over 180 articles in journals
such as Nature, the American Journal of Immunology, Transplantation,
Blood, Bone Marrow Transplantation, the Journal of Experimental
Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the New England
Journal of Medicine and the Annuals of Internal Medicine.
