John J. Fung, MD, PhD, FACS

John J. Fung received a medical degree and a doctorate in
immunology from the University of Chicago. His postgraduate
training included a residency in general surgery at Strong
Memorial Hospital and University of Rochester and a fellowship
in transplantation surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Between 1987 and 1988, he served as Director of Histocompatibility
Testing at the University of Rochester. In 1989, he joined
the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, and held the
tenured position as the inaugural Thomas E. Starzl Professor
in Surgery. In 2004, he came to the Cleveland Clinic as Director
of the Transplant Center and Chairman of the Department of
General Surgery.
He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He holds membership
in several professional organizations, including the American
Liver Foundation, American Society of Transplant Surgeons,
and American Surgical Association. His honors include the
American Liver Foundation Special Award for Leadership in
Liver Transplantation, the AST-Novartis Clinical Investigator
Award and the American Association for the Study of Liver
Disease Achievement in Liver Transplantation Award.
Dr. Fung has written more than 800 articles in such journals
as Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, New England
Journal of Medicine, and American Journal of Transplantation
and has contributed to 60 books. He is Editor-in-Chief of
Liver Transplantation. Dr. Fung’s research
includes studies on the nature of hepatic transplant-related
tolerance, small-for-size liver syndrome, and immunosuppression
in clinical transplantation. |
